Military ID to buy a pint

Monday July 19, 2010 at 3:36pm

It seems strange that Military ID may not be accepted as poof of age when buying alcohol. You may think that Military ID is the most secure form of ID. But for a long time the acceptable forms of ID have been a Passport, European Driving Licence (with photo), and a PASS accredited card.

All the training and literature and signage has been geared to these forms of ID. And many Premises Licences will have conditions endorsed on them insisting on specific accepatble forms of ID, and Military ID is seldom among them, if at all. So the Challenge 21 schemes and the like will not help our young soldiers who are fit to fight and die for our country but cannot use their Military ID to buy a pint. It's a strange world!

But change may be afoot. Perhaps the sacrifices of our young lads (and lasses) is striking a chord of common sense. The British Beer and Pub Association is backing the use of Military ID as an acceptable form of ID for licensed premises. The issue will probably only occur near barracks, but perhaps there should be a recognition everywhere that Militray ID is ok. At the end of the day it is a matter for the management of premises which ID they will accept (subject to any licence conditions), but perhaps it will not be too much of a burden to include Militay ID in training so it can be accepted by bar staff and off licence staff.

It always bemuses me that in this country we can marry at 16 and raise a family and at 17 can go to war and die for our country, but until you are 18 you cannot buy alcohol. As I said it is a strange world.

Thanks for the information Lance. The Home Office need to lead on this one as far as pubs and bars are concerned. They need to educate landlords police and the licensing authorities so that the military ID is recognised along with Passports and Driving Licences and Proof of Age cards. I would be grateful for any further information when it is available....

Nigel The announcement will be in the next few days , further information as to the details of the "Change" of parameters of MOD90 use will be seen in most of the national tabloids, troops throughout the armed forces will be informed also prior to the change in circumstances of the MOD90, I have worked on this issue for nearly 12 months with the "New Government". an understanding of why troops are restricted to civilian ID whilst operational is for reasons of a "Positive security Protocol" whilst in hostile environments. It is also a "Negative Security Protocol" to have MOD90 ID, Driving License & Passport all in one place at the same time "In a Wallet" it contravenes the "Counter Terrorism Bill" ie if lost the "Terrorist" implications of a following up on family, NOK private addresses etc....

Nigel Like yourself I am awaiting the press release from the MOD / Home office, I am aware that official correspondence has been forwarded prior to the press release, to all agencies civil & Local Gov in prep for the "media release" of this item .... as identified the problem was not only on my doorstep but a national need for concern which required urgent attention by the new government. our armed forces moral is apparently a rock bottom at the moment further "rejection" & "None-recognition" by a "privately instigated" ID checking system of the "Challenge Schemes" would only fuel an already "Battered & Rejected" HMF within the Retail & Drinks industry. its coming & will be substantial in the parameters of application & enforcement....
