Electricty Supply - Tenants New Rights

Wednesday April 6, 2011 at 11:02am

If you are a tenant in a multi-let building/estate and reimburse your landlord for the electricity supply then you will be interested to hear about your new rights. Recent changes give tenants the power to demand cheaper electricity costs from a different supplier.

A tenant may now notify their landlord that they want to receive electricity from another supplier and the landlord must respond within 21 days or risk committing a criminal offence.

This will benefit those tenants that believe their landlords are not procuring the electric supply to the building or estate at a competitive rate. Landlords should therefore review their energy supply arrangements to pre-empt any potential requests from tenants in the future.

Further guidance from Ofgem will follow shortly.

I think this is a very interesting change. It makes sense though. If a tenant is paying for the electricity, then they should be able to voice their opinion on who the supplier should be. ...
